چکیده

Isolated cases of meningitis attributable to Torula histolytica had been described, possibly as early as 1861,25 but it remained for Stoddard and Cutler2" in 1916 to segregate these cases, on the basis of clinical and pathological findings, from many other instances of infections by yeast and yeast-like organisms. They describe two additional cases and carefully studied the causative organism. On the basis of cultural characteristics and animal inoculation experiments, they established beyond doubt that Torula infection, oidiomycosis, and coccidioidal granuloma can be clearly differentiated. The name Toruda histolytica was introduced by Stoddard and Cutler. They were of the opinion that the organism had not been previously described, but it has subsequently become evident2 that the organism is identical with Cryptococcus homin*s, described by Busse7 and Buschke5 some twenty years earlier. The introduction of the new name was based upon an erroneous statement by Buschke' that Cryptococcus honu'is formed spores. Torulae are yeast-like organisms usually dassified as one of the Hyphomycetes or fungi imperfecti, inasmuch as sexual reproduction is absent or unknown. The organism resembles true yeasts in that it reproduces by budding, but differs from the true yeasts in that it is incapable of fermenting sugars except to the extent of slight acid formation in a few instances. The reader is referred to papers by Benham' and Stovall and Bubolz22 for details of morphology, cultural characteristics, and sugar reactions.

A case of systemic torula infection with tumour formation in the meninges.

THE case described below showed features distinct from the common clinical and pathological picture of torula infection. Systemic lesions were prominent before signs of central nervous system involvement. The lesion in the cranium gave rise to the clinical picture of a space-occupying lesion, while resection of the tumour was carried out with some measure of success. Typical cases of torula men...

Studies in genera similar to Torula: Bahusaganda, Bahusandhika, Pseudotorula, and Simmonsiella gen. nov.

A generic key is presented to delimit Torula from seven hyphomycete genera whose type species were at one time included in the genus or whose conidium ontogeny and conidium development appear similar or superficially similar to that of Torula herbarum, the type of the genus. In Bahusaganda, two new species are described (B. elliseverhartii and B. simmonsii spp. nov.) and three new combinations ...

Capsular Reactions and Soluble Antigens of Torula Histolytica and of Sporotrichum Schenckii

The present paper deals with reactions between antiserums and the capsules of Torula histolytica (Cryptococcus hominis or Torulopsis neoformans) and of Sporotrichum schenckii. The reactions, although similar in principle to the capsular swelling seen in Quellung tests of bacteria, present a special interest because the microorganisms are larger in size and more complex in structure than bacteri...

Crystalline amylose from cultures of a pathogenic yeast, Torula histolytica.

Mager and Aschner (1, 2) have reported that certain yeasts belonging to the genus Torulopsis, when grown under the proper conditions, produce an extracellular polysaccharide that gives an intense blue color with iodine, and have suggested (3) a method for the identification of the pathogenic species Torulopsis neoformans (i.e., Torula histolytica) based in part on that capacity. The blue-staini...
